New Therapy Group: Stabilisation Skills After Trauma
NEW GROUP AT THE OXFORD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE LTD
This skills-based group will teach ways of calming and quietening the intense emotions and states of physiological arousal which often follow traumatic events. These skills help survivors of trauma to have choices and to feel more in charge of their own lives. Participants will build a range of personal resources, the object being to begin to feel better without addressing the trauma directly.
The methods offered are based on current, leading-edge trauma research and extensive clinical experience.
'The solidarity of a group provides the strongest protection against terror and despair, and the strongest antidote to traumatic experience. Trauma isolates; the group re-creates a sense of belonging. Trauma shames and stigmatises; the group bears witness and affirms; Trauma degrades the victims; the group exalts her. Trauma dehumanises the victim; the group restores her humanity.' Herman, 1994, p214.
This group will run for ten sessions each lasting 2½ hours, on Thursday evenings in Witney. Each group will consist of six members who will be asked to make a commitment of attending all the sessions.
Cost: £50 per person for each 2½ hour group session
